GR Montessori at North Park is part of the Montessori program offered by the Grand Rapids Public Schools. On 4 campuses, this theme school program serves more than 1,000 students from Pre-K age 3 to grade 12. The North Park campuses include the North Park building at 3375 Cheney Ave NE (home to children in grades 1 through 8) and the North Park Early Childhood Center at 800 Wellerwood Ave NE (home to children ages 3 through kindergarten).
The Montessori environment contains specially designed, hands-on materials that invite children to engage in learning activities of their own choosing. Under the guidance of a specially trained teacher, children in a Montessori classroom learn by making discoveries with the materials, cultivating concentration, motivation, self-discipline and a love of learning. With the unique Montessori model and the results it delivers, North Park has experienced considerable growth in recent years. Students from all over the city interact and learn within a great cross-section of our area’s population.
Autism Spectrum Disorder Program
North Park has 2 self-contained Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) classrooms grades K to 5.
Each individual with autism is unique. Many of those on the autism spectrum have exceptional abilities in visual skills, music and academic skills. About 40 percent have average to above average intellectual abilities. Indeed, many persons on the spectrum take deserved pride in their distinctive abilities and “atypical” ways of viewing the world. Others with autism have significant disability and are unable to live independently.
